Known for his witty look and poetic style, Shail Chaturvedi was a famous name in the field of poetry. He was a prominent face of Kavi sammelan. Chaturvedi specialized in satire and comedy. In his long career he earned admiration from wide range of audiences. He was famous amongst people for his poetic style. His death on 29 October 2007 was mourned by millions of fans.
Born on 29 June 1936, Chaturvedi started his career as a lecturer at Allahabad University. His inclination towards poetry brought him closer to Kavi sammelan (poetry gatherings), where he actively took part earning wide applauds from audiences. People would love to hear his famous compositions like Bazar Ka Ye Hal Hai and Chal Gayi. His tongue-in-cheek political commentary set him apart from other humorists of 1970s and 1980s. A Hindi poet, satirist, humorist, lyricist and actor from India he was known for political satire revolving around the life of a common man. No Kavi Sammelan on Doordarshan was deemed complete without hearing his works. His humorous poem were enough to tickle the funny bones. In his works he carried experiences of a common man. The poem, although written years back, still carries an air of freshness and excellence which is rare to find these days.
Apart from poetry he also worked as a character actor in several Hindi films and TV series. His role as Mr. Bablu Prasad Sharma a.k.a. Mr. Sharma, in popular sitcom Shrimaan Shrimati is remembered till date. His way of scolding his incompetent employee Keshav Kulkarni by refering as "luccha" (meaning "a cheat" in Hindi) or "bhikmanga Kulkarni" (meaning "beggar") and the most popular one 3rd class aadmi was enough to make people laugh. He also acted in many films including Uphaar (1971), Chitchor (1976), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986) and Kareeb (1998). He died on 29 October 2007, after suffering from chronic renal failure for some time, and was survived by his wife Daya and three sons.
